Understanding Nasal Congestion

What is Nasal Congestion?

Nasal congestion, commonly called a stuffy or blocked nose, is the blockage of nasal passages due to swelling of the nasal tissues. It occurs when the blood vessels in the nose become dilated and the nasal lining becomes inflamed, causing the turbinates (thin bony structures in the nose) to swell. This narrowing of the nasal airway makes it difficult to breathe through the nose. Nasal congestion is one of the most common medical complaints and can be caused by infections, allergies, structural problems, or environmental factors. While often temporary, chronic nasal congestion can significantly impact quality of life, sleep, and daily activities.

Root Causes

What's Causing Your Nasal Congestion

Identifying the underlying causes of nasal congestion allows us to target treatment effectively for lasting results.

1

Viral Infection

Most Common (40%)

Respiratory viruses cause inflammation of nasal passages and increased mucus production.

2

Allergic Rhinitis

Very Common

Histamine release causes nasal tissue swelling and excess mucus production.

3

Chronic Sinusitis

Common

Long-term inflammation of sinus passages causes persistent congestion.

4

Vasomotor Rhinitis

Common

Hyperactive nasal blood vessels respond to triggers like temperature, odors.

5

Deviated Septum

Very Common

Structural curvature of nasal septum physically blocks one or both airways.

6

Nasal Polyps

Moderately Common

Noncancerous growths in nasal passages physically obstruct airflow.
