Nasal Congestion
Understanding causes, diagnosis, and effective treatments for clear breathing
What is Nasal Congestion?
Nasal congestion, commonly called a stuffy or blocked nose, is the blockage of nasal passages due to swelling of the nasal tissues. It occurs when the blood vessels in the nose become dilated and the nasal lining becomes inflamed, causing the turbinates (thin bony structures in the nose) to swell. This narrowing of the nasal airway makes it difficult to breathe through the nose. Nasal congestion is one of the most common medical complaints and can be caused by infections, allergies, structural problems, or environmental factors. While often temporary, chronic nasal congestion can significantly impact quality of life, sleep, and daily activities.
