Tooth Sensitivity
Understanding causes, diagnosis, and effective treatments for dental comfort
What is Tooth Sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity, also known as dentin hypersensitivity, is a common dental condition characterized by sharp, sudden pain in one or more teeth when exposed to certain stimuli. The pain typically occurs when the protective enamel layer wears down or when gum recession exposes the underlying dentin. Dentin contains microscopic tubules that connect to the nerve endings in the tooth pulp. When these tubules are exposed to hot, cold, sweet, or acidic substances, they transmit sensations directly to the nerve, causing the characteristic sharp pain. This condition affects up to 57% of the population at some point in their lives.

What's Causing Your Tooth Sensitivity
Identifying the underlying causes of tooth sensitivity allows us to target treatment effectively for lasting results.
Enamel Erosion
Most Common (40%)Acid exposure from foods, drinks, or acid reflux dissolves the protective enamel layer, exposing dentin.
Gum Recession
Very CommonGum disease or aggressive brushing pulls gum tissue away, exposing the sensitive root surface.
Tooth Decay
CommonCavities create pathways for stimuli to reach the dental pulp.
Cracked Teeth
CommonMicro-cracks from trauma or grinding allow fluid movement in dentin tubules.
Teeth Grinding
CommonChronic bruxism wears down enamel and creates stress fractures.
Recent Dental Work
CommonProcedures can temporarily irritate the dental pulp or affect the bite.
