Blindness
Understanding vision loss and maintaining quality of life
What is Blindness?
Blindness is a condition characterized by significant loss of visual function, ranging from partial inability to see to complete loss of vision. Legally, blindness is often defined as visual acuity of 20/200 or worse in the better-seeing eye, or a visual field of 20 degrees or less. However, blindness exists on a spectrum, and many individuals who are legally blind may have some remaining vision. Blindness can be congenital or acquired, and can result from damage to any part of the visual system from the eye to the brain.
Healthy Baseline
Optimal function
- Normal visual acuity (20/20)
- Full visual field (180 degrees horizontal)
- Normal color vision
- Good depth perception
- Normal night vision
- Clear, sharp vision at all distances

What's Causing Your Blindness
Identifying the underlying causes of blindness allows us to target treatment effectively for lasting results.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Leading cause (15%)High blood sugar damages retinal blood vessels, causing leakage, swelling, and eventual vision loss.
Glaucoma
Second leading causeIncreased intraocular pressure damages optic nerve, typically causing peripheral vision loss first.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Third leading causeDegeneration of central retina (macula) destroys central vision.
Cataracts
Leading cause globallyClouding of natural lens blocks light from reaching retina.
Retinal Detachment
Medical emergencyRetina separates from underlying tissue, cutting off blood supply.
Optic Neuropathy
Less commonDamage to optic nerve from various causes interrupts visual signals.
Stroke
Significant causeBrain damage from stroke can affect visual processing.
How We Assess Causes
Our comprehensive evaluation combines detailed health history, advanced diagnostic testing, and constitutional assessment to identify the unique combination of factors contributing to your blindness.
Important Note
The probabilities shown are based on clinical research and our patient population. Your individual case may have different contributing factors. A comprehensive evaluation is necessary to determine your specific root causes.
