Light Sensitivity
Understanding photophobia causes and effective treatments
What is Light Sensitivity?
Light sensitivity, medically known as photophobia, is an abnormal intolerance to light that causes discomfort or pain when exposed to bright light. While some degree of light sensitivity is normal, excessive sensitivity that interferes with daily activities can indicate underlying eye conditions, neurological disorders, or systemic illnesses. The condition results from increased sensitivity of the optic nerve or abnormal signals from light-processing areas in the brain.

What's Causing Your Light Sensitivity
Identifying the underlying causes of light sensitivity allows us to target treatment effectively for lasting results.
Migraine
Most Common (40%)Trigeminal nerve activation during migraine attacks causes abnormal light sensitivity in the brain's thalamus.
Dry Eye Syndrome
Very Common (20%)Insufficient tear film exposes corneal nerves, increasing light sensitivity.
Uveitis
Common (10%)Inflammation inside the eye increases sensitivity to light.
Corneal Abrasion
AcuteDamaged corneal surface causes severe light sensitivity.
Conjunctivitis
Common (10%)Inflamed conjunctiva makes eyes reactive to light.
Blepharospasm
Less CommonInvoluntary eyelid spasms triggered by light.
Albinism
CongenitalLack of pigment in iris allows excess light entry.
How We Assess Causes
