General Symptom-Hepatic

Caput Medusae

Umbilical Varicose Veins - A Sign of Portal Hypertension

Understanding This symptom

What is This symptom?

Caput Medusae (Latin for 'head of Medusa') refers to a visible network of varicose veins radiating from the umbilicus (navel). This striking visual pattern resembles the snaky hair of the mythological Medusa and indicates increased pressure in the portal venous system, often signaling serious liver disease. At Healers Clinic, we recognize this as a significant indicator requiring comprehensive evaluation.

Healthy Baseline

Optimal function

  • No visible veins around the umbilicus
  • Normal portal vein pressure
  • Healthy liver function
  • Absence of abdominal distensions

Root Causes

What's Causing Your This symptom

Identifying the underlying causes of this symptom allows us to target treatment effectively for lasting results.

1

Portal Hypertension

Primary Cause (90%+)

Increased pressure in the portal vein (carries blood from intestines to liver) causes collateral veins to dilate and become visible around the umbilicus. This is the PRIMARY cause of Caput Medusae. When pressure exceeds 10-12 mmHg, blood seeks alternative pathways through collateral vessels.

2

Liver Cirrhosis

Very Common (70-80%)

Chronic liver damage causes scarring (fibrosis) and increased resistance to blood flow, leading to portal hypertension and visible collateral veins. This is the most common underlying cause in Western populations.

3

Hepatic Vein Thrombosis (Budd-Chiari Syndrome)

Less Common (5-10%)

Blood clot in the hepatic veins blocks outflow, causing backup pressure in the portal system and visible abdominal veins. This is a medical emergency requiring immediate intervention.

4

Superior Vena Cava Obstruction

Rare (2-5%)

Blockage of the superior vena cava causes blood to find alternative pathways, potentially creating visible chest/abdominal veins. Different pattern than true Caput Medusae.

5

Congenital Umbilical Vein Persistence

Very Rare (<1%)

Failure of the umbilical vein to close after birth (persistent fetal circulation) can lead to persistent venous patterns. Usually asymptomatic.
