Facial Palsy
Understanding causes, types, and effective treatments for facial paralysis
What is Facial Palsy?
Facial palsy is weakness or paralysis of the muscles of the face, typically on one side. It results from damage to the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII), which controls the muscles of facial expression. The most common cause is Bell's palsy, an idiopathic condition that typically causes sudden onset weakness. Other causes include stroke, tumors, trauma, and infections. The condition can range from mild weakness to complete paralysis.
