Frequently Asked Questions
What are night terrors?
Night terrors are intense episodes where a child appears terrified, screams, thrashes, and is confused during sleep. They occur during deep sleep (non-REM) and the child has no memory of the episode.
How are night terrors different from nightmares?
Night terrors occur in deep sleep (first third of night), child is confused and inconsolable, no memory next day. Nightmares occur in REM sleep (later in night), child wakes fully, remembers dream, can be consoled.
Are night terrors dangerous?
The child is asleep during the episode and usually not in real danger. However, they may move around, so safety measures are important. The condition itself is generally harmless and children outgrow it.
